Biography of Nayantara Sahgal
Nayantara Sahgal is a distinguished Indian writer, novelist, and political commentator. She was born on May 10, 1927, in Allahabad. She belongs to a prominent political family and is the daughter of Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit and the niece of Jawaharlal Nehru. Growing up during India’s freedom struggle, she was deeply influenced by nationalist ideals and democratic values.
Nayantara Sahgal received her education in India and later in the United States. She began her literary career by writing about Indian politics, society, and the challenges faced by a newly independent nation. Her novels and essays often focus on democracy, freedom, human rights, and political issues.
Some of her well-known works include Rich Like Us, Storm in Chandigarh, and Prison and Chocolate Cake. She has received several literary awards for her contributions to Indian English literature.
Nayantara Sahgal is also the author of the prose piece “The Passing Away of Bapu,” which describes the grief and sorrow felt by the people of India after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948.
